Designer wear collections of NIIFT’s graduating fashion design students to be showcased at ‘Anukama 18’

Chandigarh, May 19:

Northern Indian Institute of Fashion Technology(NIIFT), Mohali, set up by Government of Punjab, is all set to hold Anukama 2018, a graduating show for the Fashion Design(FD) batch of NIIFT, on May 20 at Shivalik Public School, Phase 6, Mohali, 6.30 p.m. onwards. Details of the stylish showcase were shared by Mr. DPS Kharbanda, IAS, Director of Industries & Commerce, Punjab & Director General, NIIFT, Mr. KS Brar, Director, NIIFT, Mr. Inderjit Singh, Registrar, NIIFT & Dr. Simrita Singh, Coordinator, Anukama 2018 & HOD, FD Department. The young fashion designers and fashion week models both female & male were also present.

The evening will feature 52 exquisite collections on the ramp created by the students of Fashion Design Department of NIIFT. This final presentation is an amalgamation of the learning that the students imbibe during their education at the institute. Through the media of colors, materials, finishes, and techniques, the students express individual statements as design collections. Three years of knowledge, sweat, and assessment culminate at the annual ramp presentation – Anukama’18.

Mr. Sunder Sham Arora, Hon’ble Industries & Commerce, Minister, Punjab has very kindly agreed to be the Chief Guest and give away the awards. The special guest for the occasion is Mr. Rakesh Kumar Verma, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries & Commerce, Punjab and Chairman, NIIFT.

Mr. D P S Kharbanda, IAS, Director of Industries & Commerce, Punjab & Director General, NIIFT said, “NIIFT is an accredited, diverse, and expanding college of Fashion, Management and Technology established in 1995 and has grown to be one of the country’s premiere fashion education institutes. NIIFT provides B.Sc and M.Sc Degrees. NIIFT has become the breeding ground for talented fashion designers and merchandisers.”

Over 30 male and female models would walk the ramp adding the glam quotient to the students’ creations. Students were guided by their Mentors; Dr. Poonam Aggarwal, Dr. Simrita Singh, Ms. Deepti Sharma, Mr. Gobiend Rai and Ms. Navdeep Kaur.

Mr. K S Brar, Director, NIIFT said, “NIIFT plays an important role in providing career options to the youth of the region in the Apparel and Garment sector. The whole purpose of NIIFT is to give Fashion Industry of the region a boost along with educating the students with the latest technology and R&D in the field of Fashion Design.”

The students’ collections were juried by industry experts and top ranking Designers and will be showcased by professional models, in a high-caliber elegant presentation that has become a staple in the college’s lineup of annual events.

“The collections comprise of eclectic ensembles painstakingly created by the students of FD over a period of 6 months under the mentorship of the faculty. The collections vary from ethnic to modern and there are also highly creative collections based on fantasized concepts and themes. Each student has individually worked on a theme and would present five ensembles each,” Mr. Inderjit Singh, Registrar, NIIFT.

The show will be coordinated by Dr. Simrita Singh who is also the HOD of the Fashion Design Department. According to Dr. Simrita Singh, Coordinator Anukama 2018 & HOD, FD Department “This year Anukama 2018 will have collections that were done during the semester January to April culminating in May 2018.

A cross section of work done by the young designers was also showcased at the press meet The highlight of Anukama 18 is a collection named ‘Zari Misl’ inspired by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh’s book on The Battle of Saragarhi — ‘The 36th Sikhs in the Tirah Campaign 1897-98’. The collection has been created by Simranjit Kaur Sneha has created a collection named ‘In the Name of Love’ a tale of acid attack survivors. In fact, an acid attack victim Ritu Saini who will be walking the ramp at Anukama 18 was also present. Rajeshwari has created a collection by considering women and child sexual assault by applying social messages on garments. Guneet’s ‘Pastel Rush’ inspired from filigree, an ornamental art work is done with silver and golden wires was also presented at the press meet. Dollsy showcased her collection ‘Gulzar’ create using the quilling technique & with motifs taken from Mughal monuments especially the Taj Mahal. ‘Tree of Life’ by Nitika Ghavri, ‘Adishakti’ by Maya, Alisha Gulati’s ‘Zeenat Begum’ which is a Mughal Collection, Desi Swag a collection that gives a modern twist to the ancient women’s upper garment -‘Kanchuki’ were also showcased among other collections.

The show will be directed by Mr. Pravesh Thakur of Strickers Pvt Ltd.

It is noteworthy that NIIFT is under the administrative control of the Department of Industries and Commerce, Punjab and is functioning under the dynamic leadership and able guidance of the Hon’ble Minister Industries & Commerce, Punjab.

The prominent models participating in ANUKAMA ‘2018 are as follows:

Ms. Khushboo Rawat Miss India Khadi 2017 – a student of NIIFT is walking the ramp in Anukama 2018 along with other NIIFT models.

National repute Fashion Week and Runway Models are : Vidya, Megha, Vinni, Kanan, Ashley, Himani, Neha Sahni, Isha, Pallak, Rachita, Aditi, Anchal, Sakshi, Pallavi, Preeti Chodhary,Divya, Kanchan -Miss Dehradun top 12 finalists, Miss Adventurous top 6 Finalist, Miss Uttrakhand Finalist, Hema Chetri- Indian princess International 2013 representing Bhutan.

Male models are- Raghav, Anuj, Jagsher, Alam and Sid- Fashion Week and runway models.

Graduating students of Textile Design Dept showcase 52 collections

Chandigarh, May 16:

Creative facet of Textile Design Department will be manifest in “SUVYAN”-2018, the Annual Design Collection show of Home Furnishing & Apparel Products put together by the graduating students of Textile Design Department of Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology, Mohali at Hotel Shivalikview.

The final presentation is an integration of the learning that the students imbibe during their education at the institute. Through the media of colors, materials, finishes and techniques students express their individual statements as design solutions for Fabrics, Home Furnishing Products, Stoles, and Apparels.

Sh. Sundar Sham Arora, Hon’ble Minister of Industries and Commerce, Punjab conveyed his good wishes and message for the success of the students.

Sh. Rakesh Kumar Verma, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries and Commerce, Punjab cum Chairman, NIIFT conveyed his blessings and wishes to the passing out students of Textile Design Department.

Sh. DPS Kharbanda, IAS, Director of Industries and Commerce, Punjab cum Director General, NIIFT who had previewed the collections earlier conveyed that the students had shown a very creative aspect of design which will definitely contribute to their success in the industry.

Due to the Punjab Agri &Food Conclave at Ludhiana, Hon’ble Industries and Commerce Minister, Chairman, NIIFT and Director General, NIIFT regretted that they would miss the function today.

SUVYAN’ 2018 showcased 52 collections by the graduating students of Textile Design Department. Each student worked with an industrial client for a period of 5 months which lead to the development of their individual collections and exhibition of design work. Students created various products such as Scarves, Stoles, Home Furnishing Products as Bed sheets, Cushions, Duvet Covers etc. These were created as per the requirement and demand of the industry and their buyers.

The faculty members Ms. Shweta Sharma, Ms. Deepti Sharma, Ms. Indeep Sukarchakia, and Ms. Navneet Kaur played a vital role in guiding and mentoring the students so as to get a better outcome of their work.

An eminent jury made up of Textile designers, Industry experts and Art proponents were invited to evaluate the collections for the awards. The jury included Mr. Yogesh Verma, Director, May Design Studio, Ms. Isha Kaushal, Senior Designer at May Design Studio and Mr. Sanjay Kulsheshtra, Asst.Vice President, Nahar Fabrics, Lalru.

The students worked with big names in the industry as Nahar Fabrics, Vardhaman, May Design, Bombay Dyeing, Indi Tex, Sogani Fashions, Meena Bazaar, Raga block printed, Shingora Shawls, Trident, Arvind Mills to name a few.

Speaking on the occasion Sh. K.S Brar, Director NIIFT said “Suvyan plays an important role for our students to uncover their best creations. The collections are very creative, original and visually pleasing.”

S. Inderjit Singh, Registrar, NIIFT said “Suvyan is one of the best laid out exhibitions and I am confident that these students will contribute highly to put Indian Textile on the world map.”

“Keeping up to its commitment for nurturing and promoting new talent in the Indian Textile Industry ‘SUVYAN 2018’ is a platform for our students to reveal their best creations and each design presented is inimitable and reflects the student’s reverence for art, culture and nature”, said Ms. Shweta Sharma, Course Co-coordinator, Textile Design Department.

Some of the collections were:-

NIIFT Collection

Palak Sahani worked at Sogani Fashions, Jaipur. She took birds as one of her inspiration, Mughal era being the second and the third one being Tribal Reminiscence which had the inspiration from geometric motifs and Aztec patterns. She showcased her work in the form of beautiful apparels and scarfs collection. One of her themes has also been selected for BIBA, India for their September-October collection.

Praveen Kumar worked at Shingora Textile Limited, Ludhiana, Punjab. He undertook the themes of Medieval Art and Architecture, Disco Light and Floral Craft. He showcased his creativity through an extravagant scarves collection with different techniques such as embroidery, extra weft technique, tie and dye, ombre dye and printing.

Bhawana Bharti worked at May Design Studio, Gurugram. She explored different techniques like crewel embroidery, towel stitch, machine embroidery, fabric manipulation etc. She worked upon three themes like Boho which had a fusion of boho and kilim patterns, Outdoor Coastal which included under the sea features and Christmas Night for the joyful Christmas decor. She presented her themes through a range of cushions.

Bedsheets and Cushions

Shubham Keshree worked at Bombay Dyeing, Mumbai. He created two themes being Mood Indigo which was inspired from the traditional technique of tie and dye called shibori and Basics Only, essentially a recollection of typical summer days. These were showcased through a range of bed sheets and cushions.

Akshit Joshi worked at Nahar Industries, Lalru, Punjab. He worked upon four themes for fabric development. First one being Meadow Flora -inspiration being floral grasslands, second one was Surface Stitch- inspiration being loop yarns, third one was Appaloosa Spots- inspiration being dots and textures from nature and the fourth one was Vibrant Madras- inspiration being yarn dyed checks.

Prashant Saurabi worked at Jindal Worldwide Ltd. Ahmedabad. He created three themes Fancy Floral, Paisley Park and Steel Magnolia. His basic idea was to convert women’s prints into men’s prints.

Saloni Srivastava: Interned at Raaga Block Printing Pvt. Ltd. Jaipur. She created three themes – Geo Spice, Mughal and Rajwada. She showcased her work through an attractive collection of sarees, capes and dupattas.

TEXTILE DESIGN

Textile Design forms the core of the whole business of fashion. The rapidly expanding activities in the export and domestic sector of the Indian Apparel and Home Furnishing industry demands professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw materials which is responsible for 60-80%of the cost of the product.

Textile Design today is one of the strategic value adding activity that can make all the difference in transforming a fashion business into an economically viable and profitable proposition.
