There is some good news for tricity amid the COVID 19 pandemic. Twenty-Eight-Year Old Ms. Pavit Gujral an upcoming Jewellery designer from Chandigarh has created history for India by becoming the first Indian Jewellery designer to win an award at the recently held prestigious Saul Bell Design Awards (SBDA) 2020 at Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. It is noteworthy that SBDA has come to be known as the Mecca for recognising and honouring Jewellery design talent from across the world since the last 20 years. The awards are held every year and this year these were supported by Rio Grande one of the best ewellery supply chains in the world.

Pavit bagged not just one but two awards in coveted categories. She got first position in the ‘Jewellery Collection’ category for her magnificent ‘Dancing Fish Collection’ and second position in the ‘Gold/Platinum’ category for her alluring ‘Coral Ring’. Pavit has done her schooling from Vivek High School, Chandigarh and thereafter pursued a bachelor’s degree in Economics from UK. After Which she studied diamonds, colored gemstones and design at the famous Gemmological Institute of America(GIA), New York.

Pavit Gujral says, “I am grateful for the recognition received at the esteemed Saul Bell Design Awards. My only regret is that the gala awards event had to be cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic and all the awardees were announced in absentia and online. I got my award certificates by courier. It was a set-back as I and my family had made all plans to attend the event.”

Jewellery designer & gemmologist Pavit Gujral’s innovative designs created magic with the judges. An advanced scuba diver, both her award winning ensembles were inspired by the marine world. She was adjudged numero uno for the ‘The Dancing Fish Collection’ which comprises a necklace and matching earrings. The collection is set in 18K Gold with over 4,000 stones and is inspired by the magnificent and angelic Betta Fish, dancing in glory. The intricate detailing of the collection includes an amalgamation of Rubies and Pink Sapphires, merging into Diamonds creating a unique sombre effect. The beautiful Pear Brilliant Tanzanite depicts the deep blue ocean. 

Awed by the colourful corals that make the ocean so vibrant and lively, the designer-curated the ever-stunning ‘Coral Ring’ for which she got 2nd place. Handcrafted in 18K Gold, the award-winning masterpiece is an unconventional medley of Tsavourite Garnets and Trillion Diamonds, embedded on white Ethiopian Opal. 

Adds Pavit, who has also founded Pavit Gujral Designs , “The idea behind my jewellery label is that it has been established with the aim to educate my audience about some of the most beautiful & rare gemstones that they aren’t aware of. I want to break the stereotype of design that is prevalent in India and bring in a new trend of jewellery that is unique, bold and makes a statement.”

Pavit’s achievement is significant also because she doesn’t come from a background of jewellery as her family is into the healthcare industry. Jewellery designing is her passion and she has followed her heart while choosing her career.

Sums up Pavit, “I mostly work with 18k gold but I would like to try out titanium. Indian society has not accepted titanium jewellery yet so I would like to popularize it here. And, of course, I love phenomenal gemstones.I do not follow the trends. I just design what comes to my mind; following trends will never allow me to use my imagination to curate my own distinctive styles.  I want to make trendsetting jewellery!”

A seven Days National Service Scheme(NSS) Day & Night Camp was organised by Ishwar Singh Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21C, Chandigarh. The Camp was inaugurated by  Bikram Singh Rana-State Liaison Officer NSS Chandigarh. During the camp various interactive sessions were conducted by different Resource Persons, like Life Skills by Ms. Rubal Marwaha from Regional Institute of English, Organ Donation Awareness by Neha Sharma from Mohan Foundation, Self Defence Training from Chandigarh Police, Traffic Rules awareness from Traffic Police Chandigarh and Stress Management by Sister Roma from Braham Kumari Ashram.

On the concluding day Loveleen Bedi, Principal, IS Dev Samaj School, Jeevan Bala and Chetna Verma, NSS Program Officers and various NSS Volunteers attended the function. Best NSS Volunteer Boy and Girl – Tejinder Singh and Simran Kaur were honoured. Various cultural items like dance, play, poetry and songs were presented by the volunteers on Swachh Bharat Theme. A one day Workshop on ‘Designing and Developing E-Content’ under the Aegis of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) was organized by Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36-B, here. On the occasion, Shriman Nirmal Singh Dhillon, Secretary Dev Samaj and Chairman of the college released the college magazine ‘Div Dipti’ too.

Electronic content (e-content) which is also known as digital content refers to the content or information delivered over network-based electronic devices or that is made available using a computer network such as internet.

The resource persons of the workshop were Prof Maitreyee Dutta, Head, Computer Science Department, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research(NITTR), Prof. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, Human Resource Development Council(HRDC),PU & Puneet Moudgil, Project Officer, State Project Directorate(SPD), RUSA.

The experts interacted with the nearly 100 educators who had come from all over the tricity. The Dev Samaj Group of Institutions too were represented well. Educators from Dev Samaj College of Education, Sec 36 -the host college, Dev Samaj College for Women, Sec 45 and Dev Samaj College of Education, Ferozepur attended.

The resource persons explained that E-content is becoming popular because it gives  flexibility of time, place and pace of learning. The educators were informed that E-content includes all kinds of content created and delivered through various electronic media & that E-content is available in many subjects and for almost all levels of education.

Dr. (Mrs.) Agnese Dhillon, Principal, Dev Samaj College of Education, Sec 36 said,  “The workshop was organized with the objectives to make teachers aware about creating well designed, developed and validated e-content,  provide hands on experience in preparing e-content . Last but not the least, the aim was also to empower the society by creating, receiving, sharing and utilizing information for it’s progress.”

It is pertinent to mention here that as textbooks are too expensive, the students are switching from these to digital course materials. These provide both teachers and students a greater interactivity and social collaboration. The E Content can be designed and developed to be used, re-used and distributed across multiple learners.

It is noteworthy that Dev Samaj College , Sec 36 is offering B.Ed., M.Ed., Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counseling, Post Graduate Diploma in Child Guidance and Family Counseling, Basic and Advanced Certificate courses in Yoga Education and Add-on certificate course in Human Rights & Value Education.  The college has been at the forefront of developing effective E Content for dissemination of its course material and the Workshop was a step in this direction.

Angel Dsouza, a former Carmel Convent student, held her first solo art exhibition – ‘Soulful Strokes’ at Chandigarh Club, Sector 1 here. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Sanjay Tandon, BJP President, Chandigarh State Unit. The art show was open for the general public.

Angel Dsouza, a charismatic, bright & immensely talented 17-year old girl is currently studying in Grade 12 at Indus International School, Bangalore, & is an ex-student of Carmel Convent, Chandigarh, where she studied from Grade 5-10. She displayed an eclectic collection of around 32 breathtaking artworks, mostly created with colours and pencil. The paintings depicted many facets of life. In her paintings at the Exhibition, she used art to create a profound comprehension of emotions, which we exchange with our loved ones from time to time. She has used colours well, in fact a bit mysteriously.

Angel has been painting since the age of 5 years. At this very young age, she began drawing cartoons, comic book characters, cards, paintings, wrapping gifts, making rangolis and scribbling on walls. After reaching the age of 8, she participated in sundry competitions in her school, Cambridge International, Mumbai. After shifting to Chandigarh in 2011, she started practicing watercolors, oil colors and acrylic colors more than she ever had in her childhood. “Drawing is like meditation to me. I have practiced still life and other different techniques of ink such as hatching, stippling and also have given a  shot at portraits. My paintings depend on my mood and I listen to music while painting, this enhances the outcome.” Said Angel.

Angel adds, “When I feel sad, I tend to use mostly dark shades.”  She has a great interest in not just art but also psychology.

Her paintings showcased at the exhibition were mostly based on transformation, chaos, dreams, and realities of human life.

“The funds collected form the exhibition will be used to support the education of children belonging to economically weaker sections of the society.” said Angel.

It is noteworthy that she is currently studying in grade 12 in the International Baccalaureate program (the IB) where one of her higher-level subjects is Visual Arts. She has developed her interest in the Arts, channeled her thoughts accurately and is now working on her IB Visual Arts topic – Transformation. Most of the paintings in this exhibition were painted by her post IB Year 1 (Grade 11).

VR Punjab organized a Kids’ Carnival which aimed at fun and productive use of the summer vacations. The carnival was preceded by a ‘Champ’s Camp’ for 20 days and workshops for the students included Dance, Music, Art, Cookery, Theatre, Science, Photography and Pottery.  The carnival also included a Father & Child drawing competition which was the big hit with the families in attendance. To support and promote the learning process and make students’ sensitive towards the environment, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), contributed by organizing a Slogan writing and Painting competition where the winners were given bicycles. The ‘Champs’ were entertained with a movie ‘Peter Rabbit’ and renowned kids’ favorite ‘star planetarium’ during the carnival. The teams of  ‘Super Bheem’ and POGO channel visited VR Punjab to celebrate the birthday of kids’ favorite animation character ‘Super Bheem’.

A liquor vend has come up near CBSE office and WelcomHotel Bella Vista in Panchkula’s Sec 5. The CBSE office is just a few feet away from the liquor shop & is having a negative impact on students who visit the CBSE office for their work.The women staff of the CBSE office and WelcomHotel Bella Vista too are facing a lot of concern for their safety.  The location chosen for setting up the vend presents an unethical side of the business and is having a retrograde effect of the high profile gentry of the Hotel, who also find the vend as an eyesore in an otherwise very picturesque locale presented by WelcomHotel Bella Vista.

Local residents have been raising their voice against the vend in their area and have called upon the administration to find an alternative location for the vend. However, no action has been taken for redressal of their woes. Drunk people often create ruckus and women who pass the lane feel unsafe.

Anmol, a school student & a visitor to CBSE office said, “It is a wrong message given by the authorities as many young school students visit CBSE office on a daily basis.” Shruti, a guest at WelcomHotel Bella Vista stated, “The location of vend must be changed as in the evening I have seen an unhealthy crowd gathering around the entrance of the hotel, which makes the women unsafe and insecure.”

In this regard, the HUDA must look into this serious problem regarding safety and security of women & children. Moreover, it is now a demand of the local residents, visitors to CBSE Office & women staff of the WelcomHotel Bella Vista to relocate the liquor vend with immediate effect.
